The vessel carrying the new 23 million € equipment for AGCT sailed in Rijeka.

Rijeka, May 20th 2013 - a cargo ship from China, Shanghai berthed at the container terminal in Brajdica, Rijeka, carrying valuable equipment that will allow the port of Rijeka to become one of the most competitive container ports on the Adriatic.

The new equipment has arrived just as the construction works on the expansion of the quay and yard have been completed. AGCT has thus received an additional 320 m of quay and new storage area which has doubled the capacity of the terminal. The depth alongside the new quay is in excess of 14 m allowing AGCT to berth the largest vessels sailing the Mediterranean; and with the 2 new Post Panamax Quay cranes, the total capacity of the 628 m quay will be able to handle 750 000 TEU with a storage capacity of over 600 000 TEU in the Container Yard. This will ensure AGCT becomes a valuable addition to Koper and Trieste as the major ports in Adriatic.

The new equipment will substantially increase productivity, and following Croatia’s accession to the European Union, the transport time to the final destination within the EU will be significantly reduced, as all border and customs controls will be carried out in situ - on the terminal itself. However, in order for the potential traffic of the Rijeka route to be realized, the planned reconstruction of Rijeka’s railway links with the rest of Europe allowing as much as 60% of cargo to be transported by rail, is crucial. AGCT is on track to become a new gateway to Southern and Central Europe.
